- The Milton Keynes couple have lost seven-and-a-half stone in total as a result
- Jackie used to use an 11-inch plate, but now eats from a 6.5-inch side plate
One wife tricked her husband into losing weight by secretly swapping their outsized dinner plates for smaller versions, and lost weight herself in the bargain.
Bookkeeper Jackie Galloway, 56, cut hubby Lance’s portion sizes in half without him noticing by sneakily replacing their plates – and the duo ended up shedding an impressive seven-and-a-half stone between them.
Mum-of-three Jackie, from Milton Keynes, Bucks, used to serve her mountainous home-cooked meals on 11in diameter dinner platters but now eats her tea from a tiny 6.5in diameter side plate.

Jackie has now lost a total of five stone, with Lance shedding 2st7lbs
The couple say they feel like they each have a new partners since 5ft6in Jackie lost five stone – slimming from 16st7lbs and a size 22 to 11st 7lbs and a size 14 – and Lance lost 2st7lbs.
Jackie said: ‘I had been overweight since I was a teenager and had tried every diet on the market but was always in the spiral of losing some weight then gaining it back with a little extra on top.
‘I love food and cooking and consider myself a good cook – that was part of the problem.
‘Now I look back at the huge portions Lance and I used to eat and can’t believe it.
‘There is no way I could eat that much now. I just see great big piles of food.’
Jackie, who has been married to lift service engineer and dad-of-four Lance, 57, for 15 years, downloaded a hypnotherapy weightloss app in May 2014 after reading about it online.

Lance, pictured before losing the weight, hasn’t changed his diet that drastically
However, slimmed-down grandad Lance and his wife Jackie, have cut down on alcohol
Within six months she had shed four and a half stone and by the following November had reached her current weight of 11st 7lbs.
Several weeks after discovering the hypnotherapy app, Jackie decided to covertly overhaul Lance’s diet too.
She began secretly reducing the size of plates she dished up her and Lance’s dinners on, using smaller 9.5in diameter plates compared to their huge 11in platters.
Jackie then shrunk their crockery further until the couple were using 7.5in plates – the size Lance eats off now – before settling on a 6.5in side plate for herself.
The couple, pictured tucking into their smaller portion sizes, now hope to lose another stone each
JACKIE AND LANCE’S DAILY DIET: BEFORE
Breakfast: A big bowl of granola, muesli or bran flakes with milk
Lunch: Sandwich with crisps and chocolate
Dinner: Two pieces of meat such as pork chops, a large portion of fried potatoes, a large portion of vegetables and a side of garlic bread or a Chinese takeaway with several glasses of wine
JACKIE AND LANCE’S DAILY DIET: NOW
Breakfast: Ham and a boiled egg for Lance, scrambled eggs for Jackie
Lunch: Leftovers, homemade soup or a homemade salad in a small 3in by 2in Tupperware lunchbox
Dinner: A meal similar to their before diet but with less meat, more vegetables and less carbs and a much smaller portion
The couple of 16 years, whose children are from previous relationships and have nine grandchildren between them, hope to lose another stone each and Jackie is still losing a pound a month.
Jackie, who now eats portions a third of the size of what she once ate, said: ‘My mum used to always serve food filling big oval serving platters and you felt obliged to eat it all and clear your plate.
‘It was psychological – that was a normal portion, because that was what you had always had – so it took me a while to get used to the mindset that it was ok to leave some food.
‘It really is true you show your love through food and the more you love your man, the more you feed him.
Slimmed down Jackie and Lance have also cut down on carbohydrates and upped their vegetable intake
‘So when he got home from work every night there was always a big plate of food waiting for him.
‘We were always fat and happy, because we were together. We were the cuddly couple, but we had each other.’
Walking-mad Jackie struggled with knee pain due to her weight but now walks on a treadmill for half an hour every day and loves to spend days hiking in the countryside.
On a flight to Cuba three years ago she was left with bruises on her hips after wedging herself into a tight aeroplane seat and said flying comfortably since her weight loss was a ‘wow moment’.
Aside from portion size, Jackie and Lance have only slightly changed their diets and now make an effort to eat more vegetables and less carbohydrates.
But the couple, who used to buy two or three bottles of wine a week, have also dramatically cut back on their alcohol intake at home.
Lance says: ‘If you feel you have a full plate you think you have enough food and you’re not being deprived’
They also often share a main course in restaurants and do not feel embarrassed to ask staff to box up their leftovers so they can enjoy them the next day.
Lance, who has dropped from 15st7lbs to 13st and now eats portions half the size of what he previously ate, said: ‘I was a typical man – if you put it on the plate in front of me, I would eat it.
‘At first I honestly didn’t noticed the plates or portions were getting smaller.
‘It’s psychological, if you feel you have a full plate you think you have enough food and you’re not being deprived.
‘If you looked at a smaller portion on a bigger plate you’d notice straight away, but because the plates shrunk with the portions I didn’t realise.’
